Spark Inspiration in Others
In Tom Waits' interview with Elizabeth Gilbert, he talked about the torment he used to go through trying to capture the essence, lyrics, or melody of the perfect song. After decades of self-inflicted torture, he adopted a new philosophy that gave total freedom to his creative process - he realized it just wasn’t that big of a deal.
“I realized that, as a songwriter, the only thing I really do is make jewelry for the inside of other people’s minds.”
It was fun, it could be meaningful, and it was beautiful..but it wasn’t life or death and with that realization, he lost the fear that obscured his creative process.
I loved that sentiment. I love filmmaking, I am beyond grateful that I get to make it my livelihood, but let’s all be honest - it’s not going to cure cancer. But if one of my films about Dr. Jane C Wright or Dr. Rosalind Franklin could ignite a passion in someone and then they’re compelled to go cure it? That’s a really good day for filmmaking!
But mind jewelry still didn’t quite encompass what I wanted to do. I wanted to spark the fuse of inspiration in others with my work. I'm not here to decorate the place - I'm here to set it aflame. Mind Fire. I also wanted to pay homage to my Spanish and Latin culture that have been a huge part of my life - Fuego de Mente was the perfect way to do that.
